While I waited on a bench, I braced myself for the challenge ahead. I was waiting to meet Megan and Chris and their two kids, and Megan had given me some insider information about Chris. He hated getting his photos taken. In fact, he was not thrilled that Megan had scheduled this session. Megan promised not to schedule another one for 5 years if they would do this one.
It’s not uncommon for my clients’ spouses to dislike photo sessions. The stereotypical photo session involves awkward and forced poses, lots of “CHEESE” being shouted, and frustration all around. So when that is all my clients have known and grown to expect, I don’t blame them at all for feeling this way!
But with me, it’s different. While I give gentle posing guidance and posing prompts, it’s done in a way that keeps things feeling natural and not forced or boring. It involves lots of hugs, kisses, tickles, and “ugga-muggas” (for those who aren’t familiar with Daniel Tiger, rubbing your noses together). It also involves me getting my exercise in. If your toddler wants to run around (which let’s be honest, what toddler doesn’t want to), I’ll chase them and play with them. If you or someone else is just DONE, then we’re done. My goal is to keep it natural, interactive, and fun.
So with my clients who have preconceived notions about photo sessions, I have a big obstacle to hurtle. I have to prove them wrong and show them that getting your photos taken can actually be a fun experience. It doesn’t have to be stressful and frustrating. While there are obviously still moments like that (because kids will be kids), the overall tone is fun and relaxed.
So after I sent Megan their gallery, I was sooo happy to hear that Chris said he was happy that they did it!! What a win. Not just for me (because it’s ultimately not about me!), but for them! I want my clients to have photos and memories that they will cherish forever. So I am incredibly happy that they had a great time and will have these precious photos to always look back on and remember that moment in time together.
