How to prepare for your newborn session | Philadelphia's best lifestyle newborn photographer

One of my favorite parts about lifestyle newborn sessions is the fact that they take place in your home. The house that is your little one’s first home. All the memories that will be made there. Which might be super messy after bringing baby home. Which is totally and completely expected. So I’m here to give some guidance on how to prep your home for our upcoming session!

Tidy up one to two spaces

As long as there are a couple spots in your home that are mess-free, we will be good to go. Just be sure that the spaces are near windows so we get lots of light! Feel free to just move the mess to the other side of the room if you have to! I certainly won't judge you because I know what it's like to have newborns! My clients usually love to get photos done on their bed and/or on their couch.

On really cloudy or rainy days I bring my flash with me to create some extra light (which I typically bounce off of a window, so being near a window is important). I don't think you'd ever guess, but every single photo below was taken with flash on a very rainy day!

Stick with Baby's schedule

There's no need to force your baby into a new schedule/routine for the sake of the photo session. Some of my absolute favorite photos to deliver are nursing/feeding photos; so if baby needs to eat during our session, it is another beautiful moment for me to capture. It's also ok if baby is awake since I keep baby's positions very natural. My goal is to capture this special time however that looks for your unique family.

Keep Baby happy

Some ways that we can help baby stay happy during the session are to have the following on hand:

- Swaddles - really new babies can be calmed by swaddling them up nice and cozy. I bring a couple white swaddles with me to every session, but feel free to have your own on hand as well.

- Sound machine/shoosher

- Heater - this gets less important as baby gets older, but really young babies need the cozy warmth to help them feel safe and secure

- Milk - just be prepared that you most likely will need to feed your baby during our session, and that is totally expected and ok!

Hopefully these tips help you prepare for our session. It's going to be so amazing! I can't wait to serve you soon!
